  • A new design for Innsbruck Airport

I’ve been to Innsbruck airport recently and I was positively surprised when looking up to the tower: the airport is now called INNS’BRUCK AIRPORT instead of "Flughafen Innsbruck", what people not speaking German never understood. The new logo goes hand in hand with the city’s tourism marketing and the logo of the city of INNS’BRUCK. From a designer’s point of view, the old logo was an absolute catastrophy, so it really was time for something new and fresh. old logo This is the new logo on the tower that was presented mid of March: new logo (Copyright: Maximilian Gruber, Quelle: http://www.austrianaviation.net/news-regional/news-detail/datum/2015/03/16/innsbruck-airport-mit-neuem-logo.html) The INNS’BRUCK city logo was implemented perfectly into the new airport logo. The blue colour matches the feel of an airport, but the grey colour is not very wise to use here. Apart from that colour mistake, the secondary style elements like the photos and white spaces cut atilt were perfectly implemented into the airport’s new visual appearance. If you like these tilted shapes or not, is another topic and who knows what they stand for anyway. Maybe the harsh Tyrolean mountains surrounding the city of Innsbruck? • This is how dangerous the colour Orange can be

Orange is tricky: Even though this colour seems to become more and more acceptable, it is still one of the most difficult and delicate colours to use when it’s about corporate designs. Already Eva Heller wrote about the "colour that nobody likes" in her book "Wie Farben wirken" (published by Rowohlt). According to a survey conducted among 1,888 women and men of all ages in Germany, orange ranks second in the list of the most disliked colours. Only the colour brown is even worse and ranks first in this list. When thinking about corporate designs, you have to raise questions like "What message do I want to transport? What does my business stand for? What makes my business unique and stand out?". Colours have to be picked wisely to match the message you want to transport. Orange stands for the cheap (guess why EasyJet uses so much orange), the tacky and the fake. But on the other side, orange is modern, attention-catching, improving one’s mood, optimistic and it even has a positive influence on one’s immune system and digestive organs. How dangerous the colour orange can be in corporate designs though, can be seen when looking at the design relaunch of the Sparda Bank: The Sparda Bank used to have a mix of red, black and sepia. Now it’s blue and orange. The orange tone is almost brownish and doesn’t shine very much. This is combined with quite a dull blue that almost looks a bit greyish. This does not look modern at all, not positive for a bank. The colours make the bank look stale and cheap. My first association with the new Sparda Bank look was the supermarket chain Zielpunkt that is known for low prices. A better example for the usage of the colour orange is the ING DiBa bank. Here, the orange tone is much brighter, warmer, sunnier and friendlier – more yellow was mixed in. This is combined with a dark blue that looks classy and elegant (not stale like the Sparda Bank blue). This colour concept makes the ING DiBa look modern, positive, optimistic and professional. As you can see, the exact tone of orange is very important. This makes this colour so dangerous when choosing it for a corporate design. • Maximum impact with miniature

The first time I came across the so-called miniature effect was when watching the Eurovision Song Contest a few years ago. The video trailers shown shortly before each performance often featured shots of public transport in the miniature effect. Today, this technique is still used quite often on TV and on photos. And this is how the miniature effect works: The desired object is placed in the centre of the picture, the top and bottom parts (i.e. a quarter of the picture) are made slightly fuzzy. This creates an optical illusion as if the sharp objects in the centre were miniature objects. This way, a train track could almost look like a model railway for instance. The miniature effect has become so hip that it is featured in many cameras already – in the actual photo taking process and/or the photo editing section. But also Adobe Photoshop offers this feature and you can use various settings to perfectly manipulate the picture. My camera is the Nikon D5100 and it comes with the miniature effect too. Below you’ll see some examples of the miniature effect compared to normal photos when taking shots of the Arocs truck of Mercedes-Benz: normal with miniature effect normal with miniature effect normal with miniature effect Copyright: Helene Clara Gamper / HCG corporate designs #camera #mercedes #miniature #nikon #photography #truck

  • Why Tirol inspires me

For me as a graphic designer, it’s very important to be inspired by beautiful things around me in order to fuel up with creative energy and power for my job. I’m lucky to live in the beautiful city of Innsbruck, the capital of Tirol, which offers me great inspiration. Here you see some great photos of my home: Obernberger Lake: Panorama lake Schlick: Tyrolean tapas (Auracher Löchl, Kufstein): Outdoor fun in Stubaital: Nordkette, looking down to Innsbruck: Alpbach (Copyright: Alpbachtal Seenland Tourismus): Skiing (Stubai glacier and Patscherkofel): #austria #holiday #innsbruck #tirol #tyrol #inspiration #mountain #nature #skiing #lake

  • Modern Collaboration in Theory - and in Practise

We live in the 21st century. Terms like email, Skype, co-working, cloud computing etc. are very common in the digital times we live in. „Modern working“ is the name of the game and „modern collaboration“ is becoming a business standard as globalization is rising – that’s at least what I thought. I’m a graphic designer working for different clients in different businesses from different countries. The majority of my clients is located in Germany (I am in Innsbruck, close to the German border). However, I also worked for companies from other European countries, from Asia, Australia or North America so far – they all were happy with working with me. This is possible because I always make sure that the communication works smoothly and I’m also available at times that suit my clients. You always hear that companies want to work with people that are flexible and open for modern communication – well, that’s the theory. Everybody wants to be hip and modern, which is good for the image, right? Well, the practise often looks a bit different, what I found out in a few talks with potential clients that are only 150 km away from my office. And I also encountered that phenomenon at the Tiroler Exporttag (Tyrolean Export Day) in summer 2015. In talks with Austrian business delegates that are responsible for different countries, I heard that it’s necessary to have an office in the country you intend to export to. Even – you won’t believe it – in the service industries like graphic design! I talked with business delegates responsible for the USA, the UAE and Singapore for instance. Everywhere I went, I heard the same story. Incredible. I was really surprised. Graphic design, service industries – in theory, I could even work on the moon and the end result for the client would not be any different. Of course given that the communication works perfectly. Does „modern collaboration“ really exist only in theory? Are examples in real life exceptions? I can hardly believe it, but it seems to be true. Of course it’s good to discuss certain things in person, no doubt about that. But it’s sad to see that obviously so many businesses block themselves from benefiting from working with professionals from outside that bring whole new perspectives into the company. I’m not only talking about graphic design here, but about the whole spectrum of service industries out there. When thinking of „modern collaborations“, it looks like many businesses don’t practise what they preach. Maybe some managers are simply too narrow-minded or conservative, I don’t know. But you would expect a bit more open-mindedness in the 21st century, don’t you think? #business #export #globalisation

  • The Adobe Comp App - a self-experiment

Adobe has launched a new application on the market: Adobe Comp. It is intended for tablet based sketching and drafting designs for different purposes. A self-experiment: The Adobe Comp App is free and I downloaded it on my iPad. For my test, I select my desired format – practical! A canvas opens up with the selected dimensions. Here I can do different things: placing pre-defined shapes, photos (Attention: Other graphic designers report about very bad photo resolutions when exporting!), writing text – as expected, TypeKit is implemented. Drawing a simple circle works out fine and the Adobe Comp App translates that correctly into a neat circle – as if I had made it with Illustrator. Very nice. But when I draw more complex shapes, this does not work. As you can see in the example shown below, the Adobe Comp App translates my individual shape into a „nothing“ – empty space. This is where the magic of Adobe Comp already stops. Very disappointing. At the end of your sketching process, you can upload your „compositions“ into your Adobe Creative Cloud account and get the file from there and continue working on it on your computer/laptop. My conclusion: Again, Adobe have invested money, time and staff into something that is not fully sophisticated and does not provide much additional value to professional designers. The time you invest in working with Adobe Comp, you might as well invest in the software product best suited for your design project. Adobe Comp can be considered as some sort of substitute for a sketch book – if you’re on the road and want to quickly create a „professional“ design on the go. It’s a typical cloud feature for people who prefer drawing their sketches on a tablet rather than a piece of paper. I think I won’t ever use Adobe Comp myself. #adobe #adobecomp #app #creativecloud #draw #illustration #interactive #ipad #notepad #tablet

  • A beautiful end

We all know it: the symbol that marks the end of an article in a magazine. Mostly, this symbol is a rectangle or a circle. But depending on the layout of the magazine, there are also other symbols that can look really good. Over the Christmas and NYE holidays you can eat and drink a lot and spend a wonderful time with family and friends. However, this can also be quite hectic. These candles can help to relax: By the way: They also create a pleasant atmosphere in case you have to sit in front of the computer and work a lot during the holidays. Candles like these really make working much nicer. #candle #christmas #xmas

  • New function for the app magazine "Blickpunkt LKW+BUS"

The latest issue no. 1-2/2016 of Austria’s largest transport magazine "Blickpunkt LKW+BUS" is now available as print and app magazine for tablets and smart phones (iOS and Android). New is the special swipe effect that allows readers to swipe text boxes out of the display - a reverse pullout tab so to speak. This creates a great visual effect for picture-heavy stories. #editorialdesign #app #interactive

  • ALL NEW!

As you can see, HCG corporate designs comes with a completely new look since February 2016. Because: Businesses evolve, and so does mine. My design services have become more and more distinctive since 2010, this is now visible in the new branding. The logo symbolizes the "common thread" that runs through my designs. The letters are clear and to the point, strong and reduced to the essential, without any clutter. Furthermore, the logo’s width supports a vertical flow of a concept / of the common thread in a subtle way. The design services "corporate design", "infographic", "editorial design" and "app magazines" now have their own colours which make them more distinctive and clear. The claim "Designs for Digital and Print" is short and to the point. Over the years, I have written several whitepapers and made many videos that feature useful tips and tricks about graphic design, advertising and publishing. This content is very much in demand, which is why I am very happy to have made the most-loved whitepapers available on my website for free. Also, my website is now optimized for smart phones too; handy for on-the-go. How do you like the new look and the new website? I would appreciate your feedback via Twitter . #branding #corporate #logo #relaunch
