Cross-media architecture magazine for print and app

This architecture magazine is a model for a monthly paper and iPad magazine published in German-speaking countries. The target audience consists of architects, engineers, building contractors, architectural photographers, and other interested parties. The architecture is presented to perfection, with a focus on objectivity and informational delivery combined with elegance and sufficient white space to give the content enough room to breathe. Architects often work in lofts and are surrounded by plenty of glass and light. The design magazine exudes this airiness, yet still comes across as strong and assertive.

A white frame is placed inside the images to create an interesting eye-catcher. It looks as if the images frame themselves. There are no bleed-off photos throughout the magazine to preserve the white frame both in the images and around the side mirror.

The grid for the print edition consists of twelve columns per page. The main text generally consists of two columns (2 x 5); the outer two columns are not used for the main text. These columns are used for the page number, issue number, captions, and extensions of info boxes in the main text. There are four horizontal weight lines that divide the A4 format horizontally into five. The main text is always aligned along the top weight line.

Muted colors are generally used to emphasize the magazine 's industrial character. The font used for the main body text is Fjord (with serifs), as it combines a sense of objectivity, straightforwardness, and technology with optimal readability. These characteristics speak for Fjord:

  •  Straight serifs
  •  The old-style numerals have only small ascenders and descenders, which still allow the numerals to be clearly recognized as numerals, but integrate the numbers unobtrusively into the main text.
  •  In particular, the punches (non-printing inner surfaces) of the minuscules (lowercase letters) have a positive influence on the pleasant flow of reading and enable quick reading without tiring the eye.

Fjord offers only a regular font style. All desired special characters (ß, €, etc.) are covered in Fjord. The following fonts are used for headings: Agrafa Hairline (with a 0.25 pt outline), Metropolis 1920 for the Business Architecture special topic, and Mosaic Leaf (-50% spacing between words) for the Wood special topic. The Znikomit font (with a 0.25 pt outline) is used for infoboxes.
