8 ways to monetize your app magazine
Here you will discover eight ways to monetize your app magazine and earn money with it - regardless of whether your app runs on mobile or tablet, regardless of whether it is iOS or Android.
# 1: In-app purchases of individual magazine issues
You can offer individual issues of your magazine for a fee, so-called in-app purchases. It's important to note that Apple and Google take 30% of the sales price. This means that if an in-app purchase costs €10, for example, €3 go to Apple or Google, and you receive €7.
At the beginning of 2021, Apple introduced a Small Business Option (for small and medium-sized companies), so that only 15% of revenue in the iOS environment goes to Apple.
# 2: In-app purchases of individual items
In addition to entire magazine issues, individual articles or sections of your app can also be offered separately as in-app purchases.
# 3: Subscription purchases in the app
You can sell your publication as a digital subscription in the app. Users purchase the subscription directly in the app and have access to the entire content or specific subscription content, depending on the subscription length.
# 4: Free access to the app magazine only as a print subscriber
You can generally offer the content for a fee and only offer free access to users with login data.
A classic example of this is a print magazine for which customers pay an annual subscription. These paying print subscribers receive free access to the app content via a login function. All other users must pay within the app. This allows for a perfect combination of in-app purchases and a login function. We implemented this, for example, in the magazine "connecting comPETence" for our client PETnology/tecPET.
# 5: Advertising banners
Similar to a website, you can place banner ads in your app. These are simple image files with a URL link. Banner ads are best placed on the app's homepage or in a location within the app that receives a major part of the traffic. Analyzing your app will help determine what makes most sense.
# 6: Ads
Similar to a print magazine, you can place full-page ads between individual articles or smaller ads within the articles themselves in an app magazine. This video shows you many inspiring examples of what's possible.
# 7: Paid PR Articles
As in the print segment, you also have the option of including paid PR articles in your content in the app environment and placing them prominently or monetizing them accordingly.
# 8: Product Placement
Product placements are also a popular way to generate advertising revenue and then make this content available for free in the app - just like in a printed magazine.
